|Why join a professional body? Simple, because this is what professionals usually do. These are the places where people meet and get to know each other. These bodies distribute information through Newsletters and organise conferences where you can present your work and skills and make yourself known to a wider audience.
There are many anthropological bodies. However, you may consider joining the Australian Anthropological Society, the biggest body in Australia, or the American Anthropological Association, which is probably the largest anthropological association in the world.
The Australian Anthropological Society (AAS) is probably the most important professional body for anthropologists in Australia. It is a good idea to join the society. Moreover, the AAS has an email discussion list called AASNet where job issues can and are posted every now and then. AAS is not limited to Aboriginal Australia, but includes anthropologists working on various topics.
The American Anthropological Association is another important body. Although based in, and centered on, the USA, its members are from all over the world. The AAA has a jobs and careers section in its website with job announcements, where you can post your cv, and with tips for job seekers.
