Introduction to kinship and genealogies

One of the resolutions of the Genealogies Workshop held in Canberra at AIATSIS (5-6 October 2002) was to explore the feasibility of creating a national catalogue of genealogies.

This resolution was driven by the fact that, in some cases, genealogies and associated information are collected and compiled several times for the same Indigenous group but by different researchers and agencies. The idea of a National Catalogue of genealogies was explored as a means to avoid such duplication and to enhance collaboration.

There are, however, serious ethical issues involved with such a National Catalogue that will have to be resolved.
